„Where Ollenhauer is ploughing, Moscow is sewing - elect FDP“ - the fear of communism is one of the main topic during the electoral debate 1953

The elections to the second German Federal Diet on 6 September 1953 brings the CDU/CSU a major victory. The sister parties are able to improve their margin of 1949 by 14 percentage points and receive 45.2% of votes cast. By contrast, the SPD’s portion of 28.8% of votes remains almost unchanged. The decisive factor in the Union’s success is the broad approval by German citizens for Chancellor Konrad Adenauer’s (CDU) policies: gradual integration of the Federal Republic into the West and consequent implementation of a „social market economy“ which has already led to a noticeable improvement in West Germany’s economic situation (beginning of the “economic miracle”). The Union parties will form a coalition with the FDP, the German Party (DP) and the Association of Expellees and Disenfranchised Persons (BHE). On 9 October 1953 Konrad Adenauer will be re-elected Federal Chancellor.
