" The Rhine is free!":
Contemporary postcard on the
occasion of the withdrawal of
allied troops

On 30 June
1930 the last French troops withdraw from the Rhineland, which had been occupied since 1920. The occupation was originally supposed to last another five years, but the early withdrawal had been promised to the German Reich as a quid pro quo for its staunch treaty commitments on reparation payments contained in the Young Plan. Joyful celebrations by the population on the left bank of the Rhine accompany the occupiers’ withdrawal.
