The „Atlantic Charter“ is signed

On 14 August 1941 US president Franklin D. Roosevelt and British prime minister Winston Churchill sign the „Atlantic Charter“ aboard a warship off the coast of Newfoundland. In the eight points comprising the declaration both heads of government call for the renunciation by all nations of annexations, for the rights of people to self-determination, free and equal access to the earth’s raw materials and the development of a collective system of security with complete demilitarisation of all countries which were guilty of aggression. In addition to that Roosevelt and Churchill recommend the establishment of an organisation for world peace. A year later, the „Atlantic Charter“ will become the basis for the „Declaration on the United Nations“, which will be founded in San Francisco in 1944.
