The assassination on the Austrian Archduke Francis Ferdinand

The Austrian Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife are shot in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo by the Serbian student Gavrilo Princip acting at the order of the secret organization „Black Hand“. With this radical step members of the Pan-Slavists movement supported by Russia intend to underline their call for the establishment of a Serbian national state independent from the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The assassination sets in a series of diplomatic and military reactions among the European states that will end in the First World War.
