Sokolovsky quits the Allied Control Council

From Moscow’s point of view, the London Six-Powers’ Conference went too far in its decision to establish a nation on the territory of the three Western occupation zones: On 20 March 1948 in Berlin, the Soviet military governor Sokolovsky quits the Allied Control Council in protest. This brings about a de facto end to the consolidated administration of Germany by the four victorious powers. A definitive step toward a divided Germany is now taken.
