September 1920

Reich Conference of the USPD

On 1 September 1920, the Reich Conference of the Independent Social Democrats (USPD) begins. It is dominated by violent controversy over the issue of a possible affiliation by the party of the Communist International (Comintern). The proposal is rejected.

The delegates on the Reich Conference of the USPD in Halle

But as early as four weeks later, delegates of the Reich Party Conference of the USPD in Halle will vote with a clear majority in favour of affiliation. This leads to a schism of the party: the „leftist“ party members will join the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) that very day, while the „right“ wing of the USPD will carry on for the immediate future then finally join the SPD (again) in 1922.
