At a congress convening on 30 June 1951 in Frankfort on the Main, socialist, social democratic and workers’ parties from all over the world join forces in a „Socialist International“ (SI). The SPD becomes the German member party. The SI envisions itself as a loosely organised association built on dialogue and respect for the sovereignty of its member parties. In its declaration of principles the SI clearly distances itself from the Communist International: „The communists unjustly invoke socialist traditions. International communism is the instrument of a new imperialism. Wherever it has come to power, communism has eradicated freedom or the possibility of attaining it.“ Not until 1976 the SI wins greater international significance when it will elect Willy Brandt as its president.
