On 31 January 1929 the Ullstein-Propyläen publishing company brings out the novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” by Erich Maria Remarque. The anti-war book describes the experiences of a young soldier named Bäumer. Having been influenced by his school teacher, Bäumer reports directly from school to the front lines in the First World War. He witnesses the death of all his friends and the collapse of his youthful world in the unimaginable horrors he experiences in the trenches. With approximately 500,000 copies of the book sold in less than half a year, „All Quiet on the Western Front“ becomes a world-wide success.
