Commemorative stamp of the FRG for Matthias Erzberger

On 26 August 1921, the former Reich Finance Minister Matthias Erzberger (Centre) is shot to death by two members of the outlawed „Erhardt Brigade“. Erzberger had signed the cease fire agreement in the forest of Compiègne, which sealed the German defeat on the Western front in November of 1918, and he had advocated a policy of compromise with the allies. The finance expert was despised in right-wing circles as a „politician of compliance“.
