On 30 November 1939 the Soviet Union attacked its diminutive neighbour Finland – and in doing so completely underestimated an opponent exceptionally well equipped and trained for winter warfare. By 27 December Finnish forces are able to stage a counter offensive. They are especially successful at utilising partisan tactics: Small units equipped with skis and camouflage clothing launch surprise attacks against units of the Red Army then quickly retreat back into the snow-covered forests.
