Conference of Cannes

At the urging of Berlin the Supreme Allied Council meets on 6 January 1922 in Cannes with a delegation from the German Reich under the leadership of Reich Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau. Germany does not see itself in a position to pay reparations in the amount of two billion marks per year promised to the Allies. Rathenau manages to get the payments reduced to about half the original amount: In future the Reich is obliged to transfer 31 million gold marks to the Allies every ten days.
