In response to the United States’ 1947 Marshall Plan to reconstruct devastated post-war Europe, the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Rumania, Poland and Czechoslovakia meet in Moscow on 25 January 1947 to found the „Council for Mutual Economic Aid“. COMECON is established to bring about a division of labour in economic affairs, an eventual equalisation of economic conditions and to contribute to progress and prosperity in the socialist countries.
