March 1940

Cease fire between Moscow and Helsinki

In spite of considerable initial successes in its defensive war against the Soviet Union, the Finnish Army is eventually unable to withstand the relentless offensives of the Red Army. On 12 March 1940, the two nations conclude a peace treaty which imposes territorial losses on Finland in the northern and south-eastern parts of the country.
