Call for more Democracy in Prussia

During the first „war-time session“ of the Prussian lower house of parliament, the Landtag, the social-democratic caucus calls for the immediate abolishment of the undemocratic „Dreiklassenwahlrecht“ (tri-category electoral law).

Introduced by King Frederic Wilhelm IV of Prussia in 1849, it subdivides the voters into three categories (or classes) depending on their ability to pay taxes. Only in 1918, after Germany’s defeat in the First World War, Prussia will introduce a „modern“ and democratic electoral system.
