The Bulgarian government had already concluded a treaty of friendship and alliance with Berlin on 6 September 1915. On 14 October 1915, Bulgaria enters the war on the side of the Central European powers. The country wants to win back control of Macedonia which it had lost after the Second Balkan War (1912-1913). The Central European powers begin a coordinated offensive in the Balkans. Soon, Serbia, Montenegro, and Albania are conquered. The long sought-after overland access to Turkey can finally be established.
