Allies’ cease-fire with Italy

In Italy the population’s war weariness intensified even more due to the massive allied air raids on Sicily and southern Italy. The supply situation for the inhabitants continued to worsen. Gradually the Fascist government has lost control over the southern part of the country. On 25 July 1943, the „Duce“ Benito Mussolini was arrested in Rome and deposed. Marshall Pietro Badoglio took over the reigns of government. On 3 September, Italy signs a cease-fire agreement with the Allies. The „Berlin-Rome Axis“ is broken. The new government in Rome will declare war against the German Reich on 13 October.
